Meet the Author

Greetings,

My name is Amanda Stafford. I am a sophomore studying Agricultural Education at Southwest Minnesota State University. I was originally born and raised in St. Paul, MN, but currently reside in Columbus, MN. Entering my second-year I have now been calling SMSU my home for a little over a year. I have found my way around campus and its clubs. I am part of Ag Club, PAS, Newman Club, Honors Club, NSLS, EMSP, and Residence Hall Association (RHA). One thing that arose and interested me was running for executive board. Currently, I am the Co-Advisor for RHA, Treasurer for Newman Club, Vice-President for Ag Club, and State Secretary for the Minnesota PAS Organization. 

This high level of involvement streamed from my earlier years. I was "nerdy" and attended year-round school from Pre-K through 7th grade. This system allowed me to be active in activities and still maintain my school work. As the years progressed I moved into the traditional school system and stayed highly active because slowing down my involvement would "let others down." I have been involved in many things, a few I'm proud of, including FFA, Youth Advisory Board, Girl Scouts, and National Honors Society. 

I hope to continue this level of involvement and community service as the years progress and be a student at the same time. Because as the saying goes by Maya Angelou, "people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel." I will continue to impact people's lives to make them feel better about life and humanity.

I am taking a Writing for Professions course this semester, I will be working on maintaining a professional blog. Please feel free to comment and make remarks throughout this semester.

The Power of Letters

As our Writing in Professions class learns more about formal letter writing, I recall experiences in the past where I have taken time to write business letters. In high school, my College Preparation Composition class learned about complaints, inquiry, and compliment letters. As an added twist, we could mail our letters for extra credit. Of course I sent mine, since I wrote honest letters that included how I felt. After sealing and mailing these letters, it was a short 3-weeks and I had gotten a response from the companies. I wrote a complaint letter to the manufacturer of my screen protector on my Ipad. It wasn't a terrible protector, but there was clearly a defect in the one I had gotten. The company responded with sending me a new protector and reimbursing my original purchase. I still use their screen protectors to this day because the quality of their customer service and know they truly stand behind their products. Final Paper- Methods Proposal

Making the classroom interactive, inclusive, and innovative are important to my philosophy. For my final paper I have the opportunity to dig deeper into a topic that relates to what I want to do in the future. There are many agricultural topics that could be covered, but instead I have chosen to write about Special Education in the Agricultural Education classroom. The proposal will discuss current teaching methods, curriculum and current Agriculture, Food, and Natural Resources standards, and reflect on SPED methods and how they could be applied into the classroom. This proposal expands beyond my philosophy and dives into how I am going to make this possible. I plan on using the SMSU database, MN databases, Education course materials, and personal experiences to write this proposal. I also will seek guidance from teachers and mentors of mine.
